THE CHALLENGE

The True Zero Carbon Challenge, run by Design Matters National, challenges designers to go beyond operational energy efficiency by considering both energy use and embodied carbon.

The aim is to create a home that produces more energy than it consumes annually while generating sufficient additional renewable energy to offset its embodied carbon by 2050.

THE BRIEF

Designed for a family of four, the brief called for a three-bedroom home with a study, with flexibility to accommodate changing family needs and future intergenerational living.

The family values working from home, cycling, gardening, growing their own food and spending time outdoors. Dedicated storage, EV charging, a flexible external studio and accessible living spaces were incorporated to support these lifestyles.

MATERIALS & LANDSCAPE

A natural palette of light brick, stone, timber and polished concrete creates a strong connection between the home and its landscape, with external materials continuing internally to blur the boundary between inside and out.

Material selections were researched for embodied carbon, recycled content, durability and end of life potential.

The landscape incorporates native, drought-tolerant vegetation, productive garden beds and permeable surfaces, supporting biodiversity while reducing water and maintenance requirements.

DESIGNED TO ADAPT

Adaptability was considered from the outset, allowing the home to evolve alongside its occupants.

The external studio can transition from a workspace to independent living for ageing parents or adult children. Step free access and adaptable bathroom provisions further support long term living.
